How to Host an Eco-Aware Wedding
Hosting an eco-friendly wedding is a great way to reduce your environmental footprint and still have a beautiful and memorable celebration. Check out some of my favorite eco friendly products HERE and see my eco-friendly wedding tips below.
1. Choose a sustainable venue:
If possible, and within budget, look for a venue that utilizes renewable energy, recycles or composts, and uses sustainable practices. You can also consider outdoor venues, or venues with a naturally beautiful aesthetic (such as a greenhouse or park). BONUS- less decorating and tear down is needed as the space and venue itself is stunning on its own!
2. Food and beverages:
When searching for a caterer you can inquire about sourcing ingredients from local farms and if possible curate your menu using seasonal produce, sourcing sustainable seafood and meats! Offering pitchers of water or dispensers as opposed to offering water bottles is another way to reduce single use waste and can look beautiful too!
3. Confetti:
If you are SET on using confetti, here are some eco friendly alternatives:
eco friendly confetti (biodegradable and dissolvable rice paper confetti)
You could also opt for a similar alternative such as bubbles
Ribbons are another beautiful alternative that look great in photos, I can vouch for them!
4. Decorations:
Look for decorations made from recycled material, repurposed materials, or that are pre-loved. For example, using flower planters or herb planters from your home to decorate your venue. You can also opt to use LED lights to reduce energy consumption.
5. Avoid single-use items:
Swap single-use plastic items such as straws and cups for reusable items or biodegradable options. I used eco- friendly plates at my wedding and LOVED them, if you're worried about durability, well I tested them out for you, watch HERE.
6. Invitations and stationary:
Look for invitations or thank you cards that are made from recycled or tree-free paper. Consider digital or online invitations to reduce paper waste.
7. Hair, makeup and toiletries:
Chat with your hairstylist and makeup artist to discuss eco friendly products, if possible. For bridal emergency kits and bathroom toiletry baskets offer eco friendly products such as:
8. Shuttles and carpools:
Offering shuttles and carpools helps reduce carbon emissions and can help ensure all have a safe drive home!
9. Eco- friendly Wedding favors
Weddings favors that are multi- function and reusable are also a great option, as opposed to single use options.
A reusable cup and straw or a more budget friendly option to thrift them from local pawn shops!
Herbs or plant favors that also double as decor
Bamboo or metal straws
10. Gifts
In leu of gifts opt for donating to a charity or encourage guests to give gifts that are pre-loved.
Lastly, it can be challenging to host a 100% eco-friendly wedding. I would recommend being aware and mindful of making eco-friendly options where you can but no need to add additional stress to your day by trying to ensure every single thing is 100% environmentally friendly.
Making simple swaps where you are able to can make all the difference!
